AWC Introduction to River Canoeing - July 9, 2022

The Essentials of River Canoeing (L2) course is designed as an introduction to paddling rivers. Participants learn to catch large eddies and perform simple peel outs and ferries, recognize, and avoid hazards, and perform simple rescues. This course is appropriate for all types of tandem and/or solo canoes.

You need a paddle, PFD, and canoe (solo or tandem). Bring water, sunscreen, and a lunch. On Saturday, we will be paddling from Taos Junction Bridge down to the Rio Bravo campground or the Quartzite takeout. If there is interest and adequate flow, we may do the Bosque run below County Line on Sunday. If you have questions about whether the class is appropriate for you, would like to try a different boat, contact Stan Mortimer at srmortimer1@gmail.com. A flatwater paddling refresher day at Cochiti prior to the class is also possible. Class size is limited to 10 students.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are taking extra precautions. We recommend that all participants follow CDC and New Mexico Department of Health guidelines and avoid close contact with other participants unless it’s absolutely necessary. If you are feeling unwell or show any symptoms of Covid-19 on or shortly before the clinic, please stay home. We ask that you please bring a mask in case shuttle drivers are more comfortable with masked passengers.
