AWC Intermediate River Kayaking - July 9, 2022
This intermediate clinic will cover moving water skills in Class III whitewater and how to become more comfortable paddling harder stretches of river. We will cover more advanced reading water skills such as identifying friendly and unfriendly holes and rocks, on-the-water safety, some basic boat-to-boat rescue techniques, when and how to scout a rapid, how to make your paddle strokes more efficient, and the basics of surfing and side surfing small waves and holes. We will review bracing, edge control and carving, ferrying, peel outs, and eddy turns and practice these skills in faster water than the beginner course. If there is enough interest and time, we will also cover backwards ferrying, peel outs, and eddy turns, which come in handy when you least expect it! Be very comfortable paddling Class II (e.g. the day stretch of the Chama) and be able to describe and/or demonstrate the steps of a wet exit. A roll is not required, but is strongly recommended for this clinic. Class size is limited to 10 students.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are taking extra precautions. We recommend that all participants follow CDC and New Mexico Department of Health guidelines and avoid close contact with other participants unless it’s absolutely necessary. If you are feeling unwell or show any symptoms of Covid-19 on or shortly before the clinic, please stay home. We ask that you please bring a mask in case shuttle drivers are more comfortable with masked passengers.
